Takeaway... walk more. Even better... walk uphill or on an incline. A treadmill can mimic this for you.

2. Eat more fiber
I saw a lot of black beans and lentils being used in common meals in the 3rd world.
The next time you go to a grocery store, go and find them and look on the labels. You'll notice a 1 pound bag of lentils has about 130 grams of protein and 141 grams of fiber. Price... not even 80 cents! That's fantastically cheap for such a healthy food that fills you up. Black beans... a can has 25 grams of protein and the same amount of fiber. Takeaway... add either of these to your daily diet. They don't have to be your main foods. Use them as side dishes. 30+ grams of fiber each day is ideal for weight loss.

3. The big meal of the day was LUNCH, not dinner

How do I lose weight healthily without harming my body? It is hard to lose weight if one does not do it properly. In fact, over the past few years, many people who have tried to lose weight using their own methods have ended up injuring themselves, or gained more weight than before.

The focus of losing weight healthily is to lose small amounts of it over a period of time. Now why is that so if little weight is lost over some time? The traditional thinking is that the more weight one loses, the more effective the programme is. For example, an obese person weighing over a hundred kilograms loses 20 kilograms over two months through an intensive training programme, and people call that effective. However, you cannot apply the same principle to a person who, let's say, share the same height as the earlier person, yet only weighs 80kg.

The second person does not need to shed as much weight as the first one, so probably shedding 10kg over two months is considered effective. The point I'm trying to get across is that weight loss is not constant but varies among people.

Starving or eating too little is not a way to lose weight healthily. Sure, you may lose a significant amount of weight throughout the ordeal, but that results in other health problems like sleeplessness, fatigue, and weakness. Furthermore, if you are not obese yet you lose over 20kg in a short period of time, there is a high chance that you could have shed the muscles and skins inside your body together with the fats, and that is equivalent to damaging the body adversely.

Therefore, what you should do is to be patient and come up with a training regime that does not tax the body. For example, if you like running, run for at least 30 mins each day, three times a week. Once your body is conditioned, you may want to increase the intensity of your training. However, the rule of thumb is to allocate a day of rest between any two sessions for the body to recover.

In addition, cut down on food consumption if you know that you eat a lot. The trick is to eat less carbohydrate-laden food and more meat and vegetables. Carbo foods include rice, potatoes and bread. Unless you are someone who is always on the move, you do not need that much carbohydrates each day.

You may want to consider water as your only source of thirst-quencher from today onwards. Instead of ordering drinks during lunch or dinner, just whip out your water bottle and drink water. After all, your purpose is to quench your thirst, not to fill your body with lots of liquid.

Any weight loss plan, to be successful long term, should be done gradually, and, depending on the amount of loss needed, under a doctor's care. Having said that, MOST people could stand to lose 10% of their total current weight, and that can be done safely, and surprisingly, fairly easily, totally on their own. I've done it. Here's how.

The absolute first and most critical step is to adopt "responsibility, accountability and consequence". There are predispositions for body shape, a genetic plan for you. I can not be 7 feet tall. Maybe you can not have a 30 inch waist as a man or wear a size 2 as a woman. But I can stand with better posture, wear heels and be taller than I am. And you (and me) can be thinner than we are. Whatever that is. What you eat, how much, and what you do activity wise determines your WEIGHT. NOTHING ELSE. Accept that, BELIEVE that, and you can lose weight.

Calories in, calories out. It is that simple. A pound of weight is 3500 calories of intake that exceeds your needs. Consume 3500 calories less than you need and you will lose a pound. How to eat 3500 less than you need is the trick. Use both sides of the equation. Eat less, need more. I have done three simple life style changes to help me consume fewer calories.

First, reduce caloric drinks. I would rather eat my calories than drink them.
Second, reduce bread, potato, pasta and rice consumption. Not eliminate (unless fat loss is the goal), but center every meal around vegetables and protein.

Lastly, anything I can reach into a bag or bowl and grab to snack on is no where near me. That's it.

How can you make your body need more calories? Increase activity level is one way. But not the best. While you are doing anything more physical than resting, your body is consuming more calories than it would otherwise. If this happens to be a cardiovascular workout, even better (makes for a healthier heart they say). Contrary to what you may think though, you can't burn THAT many more calories doing cardio exercises. But it helps and you should do it (remember that healthy heart thing).

The BEST way to burn more calories is to have more muscle. Two men, same weight, one with 10% body fat, the other with 25%, the more lean muscular man will burn 10-15% more calories 24 hours a day just living. That translates into 250-375 MORE calories he can eat every day and NOT GAIN WEIGHT. Your metabolism rises after any workout. But within 2 hours of a cardio session it's back to normal. After a weight training session it stays elevated for 24 hours. Muscle mass requires 50 more calories per pound (should be protein) to exist on your body than fat.
To get the full benefit of weight loss, incorporate muscle building into your plan at some point. The people you see walking around with bodies you wish you had, were not born that way. They have CHOSEN to look that way.
